Tasty Introduces Family-Size Cakes
Tasty Baking Company (Philadelphia) has entered the family-size, sweet baked goods category with eight new varieties. Marketed under the Tastykake "Classic Baked Goods" brand, the line features scaled-up varieties of traditional snack cakes. The company hopes the introduction will help it enter the multi-serve cake market and expand its product range to the dinnertime dessert menu.
"Snack cakes continue to be the foundation of the Tastykake franchise but they are only one part of Tasty's future," said Carl Watts, chairman, president and CEO of Tasty Baking. "Throughout the years, we have been systematically building product offerings which affords us the flexibility to enter as many different eating occasions as possible."
As an example, Watts added that the company has worked hard over the past several years to expand into the breakfast market with donuts, muffins and danish and has been quite successful in that venue. Only a few months ago, Tasty launched its Fresh Food Service initiative to provide products to the mainstream foodservice market. As Watts sees it, the logical next step was a large, family-size, multi-serve Tastykake product for consumers to serve at dinnertime.
The line debuted Apr. 14, 1999 in Tasty's traditional marketing areas such as Philadelphia, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and throughout Pennsylvania. The eight varieties will be baked at Tasty's Oxford, PA, bakery.
