Oxygen Scavenger Use Expands in Canada

According to Bill Hullah, president of FTI Foodtech International Inc. (Vancouver, BC), sales of the Ageless oxygen absorber—which FTI has licensed from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Inc.—have increased significantly in Canada.

Developed by Mitsubishi of Japan, the oxygen scavenger can help extend the shelf life of packaged foods by up to five times. It works by reducing the oxygen in an airtight container to 0.01% thus preventing the growth of mold, bacteria, and other aerobic microorganisms, as well as counteracting insect infestation. The oxygen absorber packet is inserted into the food package, and is currently being used in baked goods, dried and semi-dried meats, pasta, coffee, and pet food.

"The product is used in all types of packaged foods in Japan, and is mandatory for many food products exported to Japan," said Hullah. "Since Japan imports a large proportion of its foodstuff, ongoing sales potential is huge."

FTI Foodtech International Inc. is a technology transfer and development company, specializing in the research and development of food and food-related products. With Mitsubishi, FTI Foodtech is part of the worldwide marketing team for Ageless, and is the sole distributor of the product in Canada.

"With government approvals in place, FTI has already received substantial orders from large, well-known Canadian companies selling a variety of food products," said Hullah.
