Nabisco Announces Plans to Close Pittsburgh Bakery

Nabisco, Inc. has announced plans to cease operations at its Pittsburgh bakery by November 20, 1998.

Nabisco said the Pittsburgh facility will close because it is the oldest bakery in the Nabisco system, its utilization rate has been less than 60% for nearly a year; and its current production can be most efficiently transferred and accommodated within the other Nabisco bakeries.

The closure of the Pittsburgh bakery is part of a broad company-wide restructuring program designed to stem declines in Nabisco's domestic and international businesses. Nabisco will remain a major employer in Pennsylvania with its bakery in Philadelphia; Financial Services Center in Wilkes-Barre, and sales offices and distribution centers throughout the state.

Nabisco is a major international manufacturer of biscuits, snacks, and premium grocery products, including such well-known U.S. brands as Oreo, SnackWell's, and Ritz crackers.
