New advanced polyester technology seals to all plastic tray and cup types

North Kingstown, RI - Converters and food manufacturers can now create strong, secure, peelable lidding for all popular plastic trays and cups with new, versatile, FDA-compliant, heat-sealable polyester LumiLid XL5 lidding film. Transparent PET LumiLid XL5 lidding film, now FDA-approved for direct food contact, seals cleanly and securely to APET, APET coated board, CPET, PP, HDPE and HIPS. This eliminates the need for different types of films for multiple lidding applications, including containers with pleated corners. LumiLid XL5 is now the preferred lidding film for dual ovenable, retort, hot fill, fresh, refrigerated and frozen foods, dairy, wet and dry convenience foods, desserts, and snacks. LumiLid XL5 is also ideally suited for cap lining and medical and pharmaceutical packaging applications.

"Converters and food manufacturers are growing business with lidding applications," says Eric Bartholomay, product development manager, Toray Plastics (America), Inc. "Now they can confidently and conveniently choose one technologically-advanced, FDA-compliant polyester film that creates secure, user-friendly, attractive lidding, whatever the application may be."

Unique, multi-layer polyester LumiLid XL5 lidding film is made without solvents, assuring food manufacturers that their customers experience a fresh, pure food flavor. Food manufacturers also benefit from LumiLid XL5 film's thick sealant layer which will form a hermetic seal through food that may be on the container lip. Additionally, there is no sealant residue on the tray or cup lip when the lid is peeled off, maintaining a sanitary surface appearance on the container and preventing the possibility that sealant pieces will fall into the food. New LumiLid XL5 also resists shredding, offering hassle-free access to the food product and further enhancing packaging convenience and aesthetics.

Toray Plastics (America), Inc.'s polyester LumiLid XL5 provides good moisture and oxygen barrier protection. Greater barrier protection can be achieved with metallization or PVdC coating.

LumiLid XL5 film has a broad sealant range, excellent hot tack, handles well on high-speed equipment, and is easy to convert on. Corona treating the non-sealant side enables brand-building printed graphics. LumiLid® XL5 also offers excellent thermal stability and superior mechanical properties, including high strength, dimensional stability, and optical clarity.
