EASTMAN CHEMICAL: Eastman's new Eastalite foam technology provides key benefits with less material

APR 27, 1999, M2 Communications - Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE:EMN) introduces Eastalite foam technology for food packaging. When used with Eastman's Eastapak CPET (crystallized polyethylene terephthalate), the new technology results in food containers with the ability to withstand temperatures from -- 40deg F to 400deg F.

Polyester foam technology offers opportunities to penetrate new food packaging markets because of its properties and economics, according to Earle Paquin, Eastman business unit manager for food and specialty packaging.

"True operational cost savings are also available using Eastalite foam technology because food can be baked directly in the display container, thus eliminating the need for metal molds, de-panning and cleanup in food processing," said Paquin. "Home meal replacement containers, baking pans and meat packaging can go from freezer to microwave or conventional oven to table.

"The unique cell structure achievable with Eastalite foam technology results in containers that are attractive, functional, durable and lightweight."

Because Eastalite foam technology is used with a polyester base, many of the inherent benefits of polyesters for food packaging are extended to foam products including good gas barrier properties for modified atmosphere packaging. For most applications, additional laminate films are not required.

Eastman's foam technology includes proprietary patents and licenses from Sekisui Plastics Co. Ltd. (Japan) and from Amoco Corporation (U.S.A.) for use in the food-packaging area.

Eastman Chemical Company, headquartered in Kingsport, Tennessee, U.S.A., manufactures and markets plastics, chemicals and fibers worldwide with 1998 sales of US$4.48 billion. The quality systems of all Eastman plastics are registered under ISO 9000 except at plants in operation less than one year.
