Cool Compression™ Units Mark 10,000 Hours of Successful Operation
The Cool Compression site was installed to monitor the unit both on-site at the Klement plant as well as remotely from Vilter headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cool Compression incorporates a new technology that greatly reduces energy costs. Cool Compression uses the efficiency of direct contact heat transfer to cool the compressor oil in the oil separator. The technology reduces oil carryover and eliminates oil foaming as the liquid ammonia layer in the separator covers the heavier oil. The inherent pressure of the oil separator transfers the cooled oil back into the compressor. Keeping the oil and liquid refrigerant at saturation temperature leads to a substantially cleaner and simpler design.
According to Jim McKusker, Vice President of Engineering at Klements, there are several benefits of the new single-screw compressor. He credits the unit with "smooth operation." Because there is so little vibration, the Cool Compression was simply mounted on rubber pads. This eliminated the need for the unit to be bolted to the floor.
Klements has also indicated that the unit is extremely quiet and that the discharge line is cool to the touch, unlike other screw or reciprocating compressors that are hot. For operators working in the area, this is an added safety feature…eliminating the potential of
accidentally touching a hot discharge line.
And, the unit runs cooler which produces less heat in the equipment room.
The Cool Compression units have fewer components compared to other twin-screw and other single-screw compressors which results in reduced overall maintenance over the life of the units. The unique design eliminates the need for an oil pump, oil cooler, three-way valve, coalescent element and separate heat exchanger. And, the smaller footprint offers facilities an advantage in tight equipment rooms.
This unit was originally installed at the Klement Sausage Company plant in April of 2002. Since that time, the Cool Compression compressors have been installed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and South America.
