Ciba Specialty Chemicals launches Shelfplus O2 additives for food packaging

Ciba Specialty Chemicals, a leading supplier of polymer additives, has acquired the Amosorb 2000 inorganic oxygen absorbers from BP Amoco. These products are used in food packaging to absorb oxygen inside plastic packages, preserving freshness and extending the shelf life. Ciba plans to market these additives globally under the Ciba© Shelfplus O2 name as part of its strategy to expand its additive technology range for the packaging industry. This acquisition does not include Amosorb 3000, targeted for polyester (PET) applications.

These products can easily be incorporated into multi-layer barrier food packaging structures - rigid containers, flexible films and closure liners - increasing product shelf life and maintaining product freshness by reducing the oxygen from the headspace, package and food. "This acquisition fits into our plan to develop more and more industry specific additive solutions" said head of Polymer Additives Felix Meyer. "With these products, we add shelf life extension to the effects we already offer. In addition, the extensive R&D capabilities of Ciba Specialty Chemicals will help support end users seeking viable packaging solutions." Other Ciba effects for the packaging industry include: UV protection of contents; anti-static and anti-fog properties; clarity; stain resistance and colors for paper, plastics, films and metals.
