IFT opens government relations office in Washington
The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) has created the Office of Science, Communications and Government relations, headquartered in Washington, DC. Through the new office, the association intends to advocate the scientific perspective on food science and technology issues by involving IFT members and developing an effective grassroots network to enhance IFT's role in government programs and policies.
The new office will contain three departments working together to accomplish the overall goals. The Department of Science and Government Relations will expand the opportunities for IFT to make contributions toward government policies by increasing its visibility as a source of credible scientific information and actively advocating the scientific perspective on food issues. The Department of Science and Technology Projects taps into the association's technical resources to focus on developing solutions for unique food problems; creating partnerships with government agencies, industries and other organizations; providing domestic and international assistance; and assembling tailored scientific and technical panels to provide expertise on specific food issues. The Chicago-based Department of Science and Communications will continue promoting food science and technology to the public by providing accurate and objective information in a non-technical format for many different audiences.
On Aug. 1, 2000, Stephanie Smith, Ph.D., will begin her tenure as the director of science and government relations in the new Washington office. Most recently, Smith was VP, scientific and regulatory affairs with the National Confectioners Assoc. Prior to that, she coordinated development of the interagency Egg Safety Action plan while working for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
